I’m winding things down now and trying to let my legs recover from the crash course they received these last two weeks. I leave for Wisconsin and the Masters Heptathlon Championships this coming Friday.
Saturday’s workout didn’t go as planned, my son had basketball practice so we didn’t go to the Davis all-comers meet. I did a light back workout, then tried to do some intervals. But my heart rate shot up too high too fast while I was warming up on the bike, so I scrapped those plans. I can’t remember if I gave up entirely or I just ran easy for a while…I guess I really am fried.
Yesterday I hit the track for one final workout, and was fortunate to squeeze a couple of hours in between the rain storms we’ve been battered with. I ran some sprints that felt good and then did one last hurdle workout that a little inconsistent but OK overall.
I then threw the shot. Standing throws felt weak and were short, but my glides with the 10# were decent, out around 45′. As has been the case lately things fell apart when I moved up to the 12#; those throws were in the 35-36′ range. I was also scratching on most of my better throws, so that is a bit of concern.
I finished up by running a couple of 400s, one at 1:22, the next at 1:15. That didn’t feel good at all, the legs were just heavy and tired. It wasn’t a very good way to finish up, and I had to keep reminding myself that I’ve felt pretty crappy and unprepared before some of my other meets too. In fact one of the first things I did was to go back to look at some of my previous “pre-meet” posts.
Unfortunately there wasn’t quite as much detail there as I had hoped for, but I do know that I’ve never gone into a meet feeling sure of myself. I’ve been better about writing my workouts down this time, so hopefully I can learn something that might help me in the future. I remember having this dead leg feeling last year, but it was several weeks before Indoor Nationals. Now I’ll find out if five days is enough to recover.
I biked for 10 minutes tonight and my pulse was normal, so that’s a good sign. I followed with some abs and stretching. The hamstring is in the “medium+” soreness category, but it stretched out well. At this point I’m cautiously optimistic about my prospects. I’ve always managed to do fairly well and surprise myself at the meets, so hopefully this time won’t be any different. I can’t say that I’m confident..but I know I will be disappointed if I do poorly.
